| I know I have this great portfolio designed here, but upon completion, I recognized that it does not suit my needs. It is too vivid and unique for the audience I am attempting to reach when I set out in the world. Sure having a really interesting digital experience for a portfolio is nice but it most definitely alienates many potential clients. In order to have a portfolio that is new edge and funky, you must be focusing on a very small group of clients. For me, I would be focusing on getting hired by employers or small businesses and individuals. As a result of this "revelation" I have decided that a redesign of my portfolio page is in order to better reflect the people I am trying to attract. | ![]() |
I just recently read the first chapter of "Designing a Digital Portfolio" by Cynthia L. Baron and she offers many classifications of designers and how their digital portfolio should be in order to attract their desired work. This got me thinking about what type of designer I really am? I mean, I make websites and other web graphics, but who am I aiming at? After thinking about this, I came to realize that I am a graphic designer with a heavey emphasis on web.
This may seem obvious…but the way in which Baron described it, "A graphic designer combines text, image, and sometimes sound to visually communicate ideas and solve strategic and marketing challenges." She goes on to say that they aren’t so restricted to just one medium. They can design for a huge number of different areas, just as long as their goal stays the same (combining text, image and sound to visually communicate ideas and solve challenges). She says graphic designers MUST have a digital portfolio and I agree.
After this I started on the process of creating a mind-map for my new portfolio, and if there is one thing that mind mapping does, is it frees up your mind. After I listed every project, skill and need I could think of, I was beginning to feel my creative juices flowing. I was getting ideas for my new portfolio. In the coming months I will keep an updated log of my progress and thoughts as I embark on this creative process known as digital portfolio creation.
